A Lush toolkit that includes soothing body care products and simple tools to boost mindfulness.
For this project, we were tasked with creating a wellbeing toolkit that would be sold at a festival. We were given themes to use for this, assigned at random; my theme was mindfulness. As part of this project we worked with the Dayfold printing company and I was lucky enough to be one of the students whose kits they chose to print.
After experimenting with a few different approaches to the objective of ‘mindfulness’, I landed on a method that I believe to be more laid back yet still effective at helping people clear their minds. Aside from the attention my kit brings to treating your body with the kindness it deserves by caring for it with the products within, I also developed a game called Wing It.
Playing this game is very simple: there’s three decks of cards, Props, Costume, and Character, and players must shuffle these then take them out at random to build a story. The goal is to get the players’ mind to focus on the present by challenging them to weave whichever random item card they just placed down into the narrative they have been building.
This project started out with three very different design routes which were presented to the wonderful people from Lush so that, with their feedback, we could develop our work.
The first route I worked on was Lunar Solar, which focussed much more on the meditation approach to mindfulness. Rather than a game, the cards offer morning affirmations and evening prompts which can be used either as journal entry prompts or simple considerations. The goal is to help people build a routine that includes a little mindfulness each day, as well as some important self-care using the products inside. As this kit would be sold at a festival, I designed the inside of the box to look like you’re looking out of a tent.
The second kit I worked on focussed on the benefits of yoga for mindfulness. Niyama is a Sanskrit term referring to inner observances, and practicing the niyamas strengthens the inner strength of the yogi.
Similar to Lunar Solar, I wanted this kit to help people build a routine. For this, I made one side of the poster a 100 day yoga challenge, where users tick off each day that they complete one of the exercises from the cards.
Wingin’ It was my third route, but the design changed drastically before my submission. This was the route that Lush advised me to pursue, however the style didn’t quite feel ‘Lush’ enough.
So, I worked with the kit concept — an easy going, laid back approach to mindfulness, which may be more appealing to those who have not attempted mindfulness practices previously — but the design got a complete makeover.
That’s how I ended up with this design. When presented to Lush, they liked the nineties-esque style, and I felt that the brightly coloured pattern across the box was more appropriate for both Lush and a music festival setting.
